Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New year from Lamby

Well we have had another great year at Lamby and lets hope next year will be better still. We will have to wait and see.

The fish seem to have recovered well after spawning very heavily this year. Recent captures of known fish suggest that most of the fish have done well on it and are now at some of their biggest weights for the time of year.

Also recently the lake produced its first 15lb plus stockie from the scaly batch stocked two years ago between 7 and 9lb. There have also been a few others over the 14lb mark of late. So we can't wait to see how they do next year, really exciting stuff!

The eight big Simmos we put in last year have also settled in well and are not so easy to catch now, hopefully one will break 30lb next year!

Have a good holiday and see you in 2010. WOW that is scary!!!

A great start for the new season.

The new season has started well with a load of fish coming out. Over the first few days the lake produced fifteen fish over 20lb and a lot of doubles.

The largest fish was Flora breaking Tower's PB at 30lb on the nose.

This one of many fish Tower landed also including a 26lb mirror carp.

New members in on the action

New member Nigel did well on his first session catching several big 20lb carp.

The catch was topped by this 27lb mirror carp.
Ross in again

Ross had a great start to the season pictured here with Halfmoon just under 30lb.

He missed out on another fish just ounces under 30lb a few days later.

In between he had a hat full of 20's.

The Carp Nations is a great success raising over £3000 for charity.

A group of big-hearted fishermen, including Daiwa's Dave Gawthorn fought for their country in a national charity match for children's cancer charity, LATCH.

The 20 fun-loving sportsmen armed with their trusty rods and bait descended on Lamby Lake, Cardiff for the two-day Carp Nations competition. Over a 48-hour period the fishing fanatics split into two teams of 10 English anglers and 10 Welsh angels to see who could catch the most carp.

All monies raised were present to LATCH, a voluntary organisation that supports the special requirements of the Children's Oncology Centre in Wales that is based at the Children’s Hospital for Wales. The funds will be used to help affected families and to promote continued research into childhood cancer.

This exciting new event generated a great deal of interest and support. As well as local anglers, representatives from across the UK including both the Carp Society and Angling publications were delighted to attend.

For the competitors the weekend started early with a chance to meet up before the event at The Wharf public house in Cardiff Bay on the eve of the competition and raised £200 with a charity raffle. This was just an appertiser for the main event of their fishing marathon. Each angler raised money through sponsorship, to fish the event and a massive £3,000 was raised for LATCH.

Lamby Lake Manager Richard Bennewith of Llantrisant said: “The first Carp Nations tournament was a huge success not only in the money raised but also in the event itself with all the anglers having an enjoyable weekend with Lamby lake. The lake produced over 500lb of carp with twelve fish over the 20lb mark and one fish just falling short of 30lb.”

The biggest fish was a mirror carp named Halfmoon at 29.07lb to Peter Battiscombe. After his great start out of the blocks for Wales it left England playing catch up for the rest of the match. Even with Matthew Burnett for England trying his best to beat his good friend Battiscombe landing Frodo a stunning common carp at 28.12lb it was not enough to secure England a win.

So when the match finished at 12noon on Sunday, Wales had secured a triumphant win over the English team. Wales having caught 19 carp weighing in at 322.01lb and England managing a total of 14 fish with a total weight of 224.02lb.

Denise Henderson, LATCH co-ordinator, visited the lake to thank the anglers for their outstanding contribution to the organisation. Ms Henderson was presented with a cheque from Richard Bennewith, who organised the The Carp Nations tournament and congratulated all those that had contributed and given up their time to make the event the success it was.

After huge thanks was given to all the anglers and also to the companies involved: Lamby Lake, BM Baits, Gary Evans tackle, First4leisure, The Carp Society and Carp angling publications and to Cardiff City Council for kindly allowing fishing on the lake out of season.

Lamby is fishing well this winter (when not frozen). The fish have fed well through the colder months producing many fish to over 28lb.

Just this weekend several big fish were landed to over 26lb. Wuzzy landed a nice common just short of 25lb. While Sion moved into the same swim and landed 26.8lb and 22.12lb mirror carp and a 15lb ghost carp and a 16lb common all in all in the space of a few hours. All of these fish were caught on BM Baits Crab & Cray boilies.

In other parts of the lake several other fish were landed including a mirror carp just under 23lb. One of the stunning scaly carp was also caught (which has put on over 3lb since stocking last winter) and now weighs over 12lb.

  Wuzzy just short of 25lb

A nice winter common carp in the bag for Wuzzy.

Not bad for the middle of Febuary!

Sion with one of his brace of 20's

A clean looking mirror carp weighing over 22lb.

This was the smaller of the brace the other fish was over 26lb.
No not a football but a ghost carp!

This gave Sion the right run around and fought hard all the way to the bank.

Sion was surprised when he saw the 15lb ghostie roll into the net.

Lamby starts 2009 with a big bang or 3!

A few more of the new stock arrived this morning! We were all more then happy with the quality and size of the fish delivered (as they were a bit bigger then expected).

  The smallest at 25lb!

Amazingly this was the smallest fish stocked at 25.08lb.

Hundreds of these fishers pond carp have grown to over 40lb and some over 50lb in the UK.
26lb with a lot of room to grow

The fish were all lean and have plenty of room to grow.

These fish have every chance of growing over 40lb.
A pretty 27lber

A little bit special this fish weighing in at 27lb and with a nice scale pattern.

Can't wait to see how she does in her new home.

Exciting times ahead!
